As part of Transformative Stories: Year of Gender and Justice, the Health Sciences Archives is pleased to release our online exhibit, In Her Hands: A Century of Women Shaping Healthcare in Hamilton.
Using archival material predominately from the Health Sciences Archives, this exhibit highlights women who have overcome challenges and shaped Hamilton’s healthcare practices, health education, and health policy from the early 1900s to the 1990s. The ten women highlighted in this exhibit include nurses, doctors, midwives, geneticists, and politicians. Records include photographs, videos, and textual records that help to complement the stories of these pioneering women.
Women highlighted include: Elizabeth Smith Shortt, Annie Davis, Elizabeth Bagshaw, Nora Frances Henderson, Henrietta Alderson, Irene Uchida, Mary Tremblay, May Cohen, Karyn Kaufman, and Roberta Bondar.
