We Remember: Letters from the Danger Zone
9 Nov 2018As this Remembrance Day marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the HSL’s archives is highlighting the fascinating collection of First World War letters found in its Dr. Charles Roland fonds.* These letters, written between 1915 and 1919 by four different men in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF), provide a detailed glimpse into the experiences of First World War soldiers including their initial training, the trip overseas, life on the Western front, their encounters with local civilians, their thoughts and feelings after the armistice was signed, and their experience with demobilization. The letters are an important reminder of the great sacrifices and hardships faced by these men and their families.
