Mediated Search Services

What is a mediated search?

In the biomedical or health care field, an enormous quantity of information is published in journals everyday. To help our patrons search the literature for relevant citations, the Library offers a Mediated Search Service. We search computerized databases on a wide variety of topics for you to find information relevant to your needs.

How does it differ from a research consultation with a library liaison?

A mediated search is a fee-based service where we do all the work for you. A research consultation is a consultation to help you do your own research.

How do you get a search done?

Schedule an appointment with a searcher at the Information Desk between 9:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday. Usually searches take an hour depending on the search topic. We ask you to be present for the search so we can ask questions, discuss the topic with you, or change the search strategy during the session thus ensuring we retrieve the most useful information possible. Your searcher may also suggest alternate resources when a search is not appropriate.

What do you get?

At the end of the search, you walk away with a printout of the citations (with abstracts if requested) or you may have the results of the search downloaded to a storage device (supplied by you) or sent to your e-mail address.

Is there a cost?

Yes, there is a fee. The costs for a search can vary depending on the database(s) searched, time involved and the complexity of the topic.

What's the catch?

This service is available to McMaster faculty, staff and students or to health professionals working or living in Hamilton.
