Resources & Services 'Outside the Library'

The library's resources and services are being extended more everyday to people outside the library, and even off-campus. With FHS distance programs being offered, the library has made efforts to provide resources and support to those located off-campus.

The McMaster University Health Sciences Library (HSL) and the Hamilton & District Health Library Network (HLN) both provide information services to the McMaster University community. Members of the McMaster community who work or study in locations outside the McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC) have options for obtaining library services.

Online Resources

Much of the library's resources are available online through databases of journals and e-book collections. By logging in to LibAccess (see below) you can access full text articles from off-campus. View resources organized by program and topic.

Library Catalogue

The McMaster University Libraries catalogue is accessible in each of the member institutions of the HLN. It lists books, audio visual and computer programs, and journal titles (with holdings) held in campus libraries and journal holdings in all the Network libraries.

Online Research Tutorials

Watch online research tutorials on using library resources such as OVID, CINAHL, the library catalogue and more.

Information Desk

The HSL Information Desk is available by telephone. Call 905-525-9140 ext. 22327. Get help finding the full-text of an article, searching the databases, and more. See the library's Information Desk hours for details on when this phone service is available. You can also contact information desk staff through email: hslib@mcmaster.ca.

Mediated Search Services

Mediated searches (done by library staff) of many different databases are available, by appointment, through the Reference Desk in the Health Sciences Library. Searches are also available through the HLN librarians in each of the member institutions of the Health Library Network. Contact staff in the library at your workplace to make a request for an automated search.
